Three Questions to Ask Yourself Before a Major Life Change

by | Jun 7, 2023 | Inspiration, Self-Improvement

Author Zig Ziglar™ once said, “Making a big life change is pretty scary. But you know what’s even scarier? Regret.” It’s true. The whole point of life is to grow, change, and get outside of your comfort zone. In fact, that’s when the best things usually tend to happen: when you’re uncomfortable. And making a major life change is definitely something that will stretch you!

You’ve probably heard all of this before. But just because we’re saying it again, doesn’t mean making a big life change is any easier. In fact, making changes is actually really hard. There’s so much emotion and confusion that goes into whether or not you take the leap and try something new.

Well, we’re here to make that leap feel a little less scary. You may have millions of questions running through your head, but in our opinion, you really only need to ask yourself three simple ones.

Question #1: Why is this change necessary?

The words “DREAM BIG” are etched on to a black wall.

Sometimes the answer to this one is easy. Maybe you absolutely despise snow, so you want to move somewhere with a warmer climate because you know you’ll be happier. But sometimes, the answer isn’t quite so simple. You might have absolutely no idea why you feel like you need to make a change. You’re just feeling a strange pull toward something new.

That’s what we call your intuition. And if you have a gut feeling that you need to switch something up in your life, it’s probably because you do! Check out this article for tips on tapping into your intuition and allowing it to guide you. Listening to your gut will make figuring out why this change is necessary a whole lot simpler.

Question #2: What’s holding me back?

The first question will help you decide your pros … but now, it’s time for us to dive into the cons. What’s stopping you from charging full speed ahead with this decision? Is it the fact that you’re worried you might regret the change in the future? Are you concerned that you’ll fail?

If you’re constantly looking for an excuse to avoid trying new things or make that major life change, you’ll always be able to find one. Here are a few ways to let go of the things that are holding you back:

  • Distance yourself from negative people.
  • Let go of your need for perfection (tough, but important in any aspect of life!).
  • Keep your “why” in mind (a.k.a., your answer to Question #1).
  • Get comfortable being uncomfortable.

It all comes down to getting out of your own way. If making this change is truly worth it, you’ll find a way to make it happen!

Question #3: What’s my plan for implementing this change?

You’ve made it past the pros and cons, and you’ve finally decided that making this change really is the best for you. Congrats! Before completely switching everything up, it’s time for some logistics … a.k.a., the “how”. This is when things start to get real.

Maybe you’ve decided to leave your corporate job and start your own business. Exciting, right? Now is the time to ensure you’ve got a plan in place to maximize this opportunity! Passion gets you started, but hard work and dedication is what keeps you going and leads you to success. Your Major Life Change is Waiting!

Now, get out there and make that change! It’s scary, but it’s also really, really exciting. In the end, trying new things and getting out of your comfort zone is what life is all about. If you never change, you never grow.
